Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects millions of people around the world. It’s characterized by a combination of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. While ADHD can be diagnosed at any age, it’s most commonly diagnosed in childhood.
Symptoms of ADHD
The symptoms of ADHD can vary from person to person, but there are three main categories of symptoms:
- Inattention: People with ADHD may have difficulty paying attention, staying focused, and following through on tasks. They may also be easily distracted and forgetful.
- Hyperactivity: People with ADHD may be restless, fidgety, and have difficulty sitting still. They may also talk excessively and interrupt others.
- Impulsivity: People with ADHD may act impulsively without thinking about the consequences. They may also have difficulty waiting their turn or controlling their anger.
How is ADHD Diagnosed?
If you or your child are experiencing symptoms of ADHD, it’s important to see a professional for a proper diagnosis, such as a doctor, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, etc. They will likely conduct a comprehensive evaluation, which may include:
- A medical history
- A behavioural assessment
- A psychological evaluation
Treatment for ADHD
There is no cure for ADHD, but it can be effectively managed with treatment. The most common treatments for ADHD include:
- Medication: Stimulant medications are often prescribed to help people with ADHD focus and control their impulses.
- Therapy: Behavioural therapy can help people with ADHD develop coping skills and strategies for managing their symptoms.
- Lifestyle changes: Making lifestyle changes, such as getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep can also help manage ADHD symptoms.
