About Couples Counselling

Because your relationship matters.

Therapy isn’t just for saving a marriage at the eleventh hour. It’s for any two people who care enough about each other to drop the act, admit things could be better, and actively choose each other again.

Our local Whitby team of registered psychotherapists and social workers is experienced in treating both straight and queer relationships at every phase of the journey. We work with partners who are doing great and want to keep it that way, couples who aren’t sure if there’s any hope left, and everyone in between.

Whether you’ve drifted apart after years together, are hitting early bumps, or are trying to co-parent without the conflict—your relationship deserves a real shot.

We’re glad you found us.

How Getting Started Works:

For couples, partners, and pairs starting the process.

The first step of couples counselling starts with you. Here’s what to expect:

Step 1: First Contact

You don’t need a referral, crisis, or certainty that this will work. You just need to take the first step. We’ll take care of the rest. Reach out by phone or email to start the process.

Step 2: Meet the Therapist

Your first meeting will be a virtual consultation—at a time that works for both of you—with a therapist that has been matched to you and is experienced in relationship and couples work.

Step 3: Your First Session

Your therapist will get to know both of you, understand what’s happening, and start building a picture of what you need. Think of it more as a conversation than therapy—no judgment and no taking sides.

Step 4: Do the Work Together

Sessions are typically 80 minutes. You’ll get honest feedback and actionable tools, not just a place to vent. The work continues between sessions too. Real change happens in the room and in daily life.

Couples Counselling Non-Negotiables:

We’ve summarized some of our key policies, so there are no surprises.

It takes two.

Dragging someone to therapy who doesn’t want to come rarely delivers results. Success requires mutual commitment—even if one of you is feeling a bit skeptical. Show up with an open mind, and we can build on that.

We don’t take sides.

Our loyalty is to your relationship, not to either individual. If you’re looking for an ally to prove your partner wrong, you won’t find that here. But if you’re ready to understand the root of the issue and build a healthier dynamic, we’re all in.

Our 24-Hour Notice Policy:

We understand that life can be unpredictable. However, your time is reserved for you. We require at least 24 hours notice for any cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations are subject to the full session fee, ensuring our therapists’ time is respected and other clients can access open slots.

Sessions are confidential, with limits.

Your privacy is paramount, and what is shared in our sessions stays between us. The only exceptions are legal mandates regarding safety and risk of harm. Because both of you are our clients, individual consent is managed jointly to protect the integrity of the shared space.

Growth isn’t a straight line.

Healing can feel messy, and things might feel more challenging before they start to improve. Don’t mistake discomfort for lack of progress—it usually means you’re finally tackling the conversations that matter.

We work with you.

We work with you.

Mastering True Communication:

Genuine connection goes beyond simply waiting for your turn to speak. We guide you in actively listening and absorbing your partner’s struggles without immediately jumping on the defensive.

Healing Relationship Fractures:

Whether you’re navigating deep betrayal, explosive arguments, or the quiet, steady buildup of resentment, we walk you through the difficult but essential work of acknowledging pain and restoring mutual trust.

Rekindling Intimacy:

A lack of physical closeness often points to a deeper emotional disconnect. We help you navigate differing libidos, lingering shame, past wounds, and the deep vulnerability required to sustain long-term passion.

Navigating Healthy Conflict:

Disagreements are inevitable, but they don’t need to be damaging. We provide actionable strategies to argue with respect, resolve issues swiftly, and emerge from fights feeling closer rather than wounded.

Moving Forward:

Sometimes doing the work leads to a profoundly renewed commitment—other times, it means making a conscious, healthy decision to separate. We provide unbiased, agenda-free support for whichever outcome is authentically right for your future.

Balancing Self and Partnership:

Personal development shouldn’t put your relationship at risk. We help you manage the balance between individual growth and shared connection, empowering you to safely champion each other’s personal journeys.

Interrupting Destructive Patterns:

Are you stuck in a relentless loop of chasing and retreating, or criticism and defensiveness? We teach you how to identify these repetitive, unhelpful dynamics in the moment and empower you to choose a healthier response in real time.

Uncovering the Root Cause:

The argument over the dishes isn’t really about the dishes, just like tension over sex is rarely just about frequency. We help you both identify and express the deeper needs and vulnerabilities hiding beneath your everyday frustrations.
